The Empire Theatre opened its doors on 13 March 1899 and has been providing entertainment for the people of Middlesbrough ever since. 

In this ‘After Dark’ tour of the Theatre I explore the history of this beautiful building and some of the famous names who have graced the stage over the past century.

Designed by the famous architect Ernest Runtz the building was opened with great ceremony – no less than 17 acts performed on the opening night. And in the years since some of the greatest artistes in the history of entertainment have performed at the Empire.
